The Elf on the Shelf Sausage Dog Free Crochet Pattern

Who would have ever thought my little sausage dog could make the perfect Christmas Elf on the Shelf? A little bit of imagination, a cute elf costume and....he is ready to make this Christmas even more special!


He will check who's been naughty and who's been nice and he'll have a lot of fun playing hide and seek in the house with the whole family!

Here's the FREE pattern!

YARN: Light (3) in Brown, Red, Green, Yellow and Black

MATERIALS: C2 - 2.75 mm Hook; Two 6 mm Black Plastic Safety Eyes; Poly Filling

DIMENSION: H. 6.5” x W. 5.5”

ABBREVIATIONS: magic ring (mr), stitch (st), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), front loop only (FLO), fasten off (F/O)

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

INSTRUCTIONS: work in rounds (join with a sl st and ch 1 at the end of each round) unless otherwise instructed.

BODY (brown, red, green, yellow yarn)

1) 8 sc in a mr (8)

2) inc around (16)

3) *1 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (24)

4) *2 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (32)

5) *3 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (40)

6) sc even (40)

7) *4 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (48)

8-21) sc even (48)

Insert the plastic safety eyes between rounds # 11-12, 18 stitches apart.

22) switch to red yarn, sc even (48)

23) keep working with red yarn, 5 sc, switch to green yarn, 1 sc, *switch back to red yarn, 5 sc, switch to green yarn, 1 sc*, repeat ** 7 times (48)

24) keep working with green yarn, 1 sc, switch to red yarn, 3 sc, switch to green yarn, 3 sc, *switch back to red yarn, 3 sc, switch to green yarn, 3 sc*, repeat ** 6 times, switch back to red yarn, 3 sc, switch to green yarn, 2 sc (48)

25) keep working with green yarn, 2 sc, switch to red yarn, 1 sc, switch to green yarn, 5 sc, *switch back to red yarn, 1 sc, switch to green yarn, 5 sc*, repeat ** 6 times, switch back to red yarn, 1 sc, switch to green yarn, 3 sc (48)

26) keep working with green yarn, sc even (48)

27-32) sc even (48)

33) switch to yellow yarn, sc even (48)

34) sc even (48); start stuffing the body

35) switch back to green yarn, sc even (48)

36-44) sc even (48)

45) switch to brown yarn, sc even (48)

47) *4 sc, 1 sc dec*, repeat ** around (40)

48) *3 sc, 1 sc dec*, repeat ** around (32)

50) *1 sc, 1 sc dec*, repeat ** around (16); finish stuffing the body firmly

51) sc dec around (8); F/O, close the hole and wave in ends.

Embroider the NOSE between rnds # 3-6 and the vertical line between rnds # 1-4 with black yarn.

Embroider the EYEBROWS between rnds # 13-15 with black yarn.


HAT (red and green yarn)

1) starting off with red yarn, 6 sc in a mr (6)

2) *2 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** twice (8)

3) *3 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** twice (10)

4) *4 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** twice (12)

5) *2 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (16)

6) *3 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (20)

7-8) sc even (20)

9) *4 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (24)

10-11) sc even (24)

12) switch to green yarn, sc even (24)

13) working in FLO, *5 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (28)

14-15) working in both loops now, sc even (28); F/O and leave a long tail of yarn. Stuff the inside of the hat lightly and secure it to the top of the head, between rounds # 10-21.

LEGS (brown and green yarn; make two)

1) starting off with brown yarn, 8 sc in a mr (8)

2) *1 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (12)

3) sc even (12)

4) switch to green yarn, sc even (12)

5-6) sc even (12); F/O and leave a long tail of yarn. Sew the front legs to the bottom part of the body, between rnds # 21-26 and the back legs between rnds # 36-41. Stuff the legs before sewing them on.

EARS (black yarn; make two)

1) 8 sc in a mr (8)

2) *1 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** around (12)

3-5) sc even (12)

6) *4 sc, 1 sc dec*, repeat ** twice (10)

7) *3 sc, 1 sc dec*, repeat ** twice (8); F/O and leave a long tail of yarn.

Do not stuff the ears, flatten them instead before sewing them to the side of the head, between rounds # 16-22.

TAIL (black yarn)

1) 4 sc in a mr (4)

2) *1 sc, 1 sc inc*, repeat ** twice (6)

3-5) sc even (6); F/O and leave a long string of yarn to sew the tail to the back of the body, between rnds # 46-50.


POMPON (yellow yarn)

Wrap yellow yarn around your index and middle fingers. Wrap until you get the desired amount of yarn. Gently pull the yarn off of your fingers, wrap another string of yarn

around the center of the yarn ball. Tie it tight to secure. Trim to form. Use the yarn ends to attach the pompon to the tip of the hat.
